Complementary Therapies with Jayne Ogden

Reiki, meaning Universal Life Energy, is a form of energy healing that has its roots in ancient Japan and was rediscovered and translated into its modern form by Dr Mikao Usui in the nineteenth century.

Reiki is based on the premise that illness is caused by a disruption in the body’s energy field or life force. In a healthy person energy will flow freely and be balanced. When a person is ill or run down their energy may be out of balance, causing stagnation. This stagnation may lead to emotional, mental or physical problems. By using specially designed symbols and channelling energy, it is believed that the body can be filled with positive energy causing the disease-making negative energy to disappear. Reiki can help the energy to flow freely again, reducing stress and restoring energy levels.

Reiki eases stress and has a calming effect. Reiki is a non-invasive therapy that can be used without fear of any side effects or overdose. It may be used with confidence alongside conventional medication or natural remedies because it acts in a complementary way.

How does it work?

Reiki heals by charging negatively affected parts of the energy field with positive energy. Energy fields in the body each have different vibratory levels and Reiki practitioners use their hands to rebalance these vibrations in the negatively affected part of the body. As a therapy, Reiki is an effective and simple way of tapping into this energy, and transferring it for the benefit of the receiver, to stimulate the body’s own natural healing potential.. The practitioner is a channel through which the energy is drawn by the need or imbalance in the recipient. Neither person has to use any effort of will or concentration during this process. Reiki flows to the areas of need; soothing pain and supporting the body's natural ability to heal itself.

What is it good for?

Reiki encourages and supports positive personal change such as improving the diet, having more rest, exercise or leisure time and may reduce the need for alcohol and tobacco. Reiki can allow us to respond more calmly to all events and build on a more resourceful state of being.

Reiki can be used to relieve the symptoms of chronic illnesses such as anxiety, insomnia, back pain and arthritis, and it often produces long-term beneficial changes.

The energy of Reiki can be used to great effects in many ways. Whether one is suffering from stress or tension and the many symptoms associated with this or wishing to improve the quality of relationships at home or work, the beneficial effects of Reiki occur on many levels.

It is possible to heal at any level of being: physical, mental, emotional or spiritual. Acute injuries can be helped to heal very quickly but more chronic illness take longer. In some cases such as terminal illness, there is not enough time for the condition to be reversed. However, in such cases there is usually great benefit and enhancement of the quality of life; giving a sense of peace and acceptance during the time remaining. Reiki supports all forms of treatment, both orthodox and complementary. Reiki can accelerate the healing of physical problems, balance the emotions and free us from restrictive mental attitudes. It may also provide a closer connection with inner wisdom.

Can anyone benefit from Reiki?

Reiki is a gentle energy and may be used safely by all ages, including the newborn, pregnant mothers, surgical patients, the frail and the elderly, regardless of their state of health. Reiki can enhance everyday life and regular sessions help to ward-off illness and fatigue.

Reiki is being used in GP surgeries, hospices, cancer support groups, post-operative recovery, drug rehabilitation, prisons, HIV/Aids Centres and in care of the elderly.

How would you describe a typical Reiki session?

Although I will ask questions about your health before your treatment, it is important to note that no diagnosis, prognosis or advice will be offered. Clients remain fully clothed, and treatment will be carried out either by relaxing on a massage couch, or sitting if that is more comfortable. Warm blankets will be wrapped around the body to enhance the feeling of nurturing and calm security. I will then rest my hands lightly and gently on the body in a sequence of positions, each one being held for a couple of minutes. I usually play gentle, soothing music during a treatment and a scented candle could be placed near the treatment area. However you may prefer to spend this time in complete silence without any distractions. Simply let me know what feels right for you.

I start the treatment with a grounding technique and a series of slow, deep breaths and once centred place my hands gently in a series of positions on or over your body. Your system will automatically draw in only as much Reiki as needed, using it in whatever way is most appropriate to you at the time.

A Reiki treatment does not cause any physical reaction however some clients have reported feelings which they compare to a flow of energy, mild tingling, warmth, coolness, general pulsing and other sensations which are difficult to put into words. Some clients “see” colours during treatment which align well with those associated with the chakra being worked on at the time. Although personal experiences differ, some people report feeling an intense heat from my hands during the process. You do not have to think about or do anything, as it is my aim to provide a gentle, warming, vital energy appropriate for you.

What happens afterwards?

Once you have experienced Reiki you will learn how to “listen” to your body and take heed of what you are being told - being responsive to the needs of the body, e.g. resting if tired, and allowing the energy to continue its work after the session ends. If at all possible you should rest for a while after treatment and make sure you drink plenty of water to help the body detoxify. Aside from treating physical, mental and emotional problems, most clients report that a Reiki treatment feels wonderful, and promotes a sense of relaxation and well being. The beneficial effects may be felt for several days.

Are there any side effects?

As a general rule, Reiki can’t do any harm because it is a form of non-invasive energy healing and will adjust itself to create the most appropriate effect for each individual person. However, although most people feel peaceful and relaxed after treatment, it can stir up emotions as part of the healing process. Some people also experience a healing reaction such as a headache or flu-like symptoms, but any discomfort should be short-lived.

How often are treatments needed?

Although even just one Reiki session can make a difference, it is usually more effective to set aside time for regular treatments. They could be weekly, fortnightly or monthly depending on the needs of the individual. Treatment plans are discussed in advance and reviewed as we go along. The nature of the treatment is that it is extremely flexible and can be changed at any time according to the progress the client is making.
